Musical genres often have themselves a fight for survival going on. 2009 sees the world of Opera scratching for survival.
Amongst the measures instituted: blood and gore-drenched posters, cheaper tickets, coordinated campaigns with film-makers, the most attractive performers trotted out in alluring photo-shoots in tight-fitting clothing.
Needless to say, we are shocked by the dumbing down of our precious culture. When we attend that one with the chick in the seriously hot grey dress, we're really going to relay our disgust, we may even start throwing things at the stage. I hear performers find roses the ultimate insult.
Anyway, we hear there are some albums out this week. So here goes:
Fleurs will be releasing their first record on Mosquee Records this week, the album features some lovely song titles such as 'Hipster Holocaust' and 'Glass of Snot', just the usual to expect from your typically garage-noise-rock band. Fluers have an extremely alternative sound which won't appeal to the masses, but when should that stop people?
It's been over ten years since the release of Grant Hart's last album Good News For A Modern Man which was released on Pachyderm. A decade later and Grant is back with new label Con d'Or to release his forth solo album Hot Wax, there's a lot of anticipation surrounding this release yet we doubt it will be that magnificent.
We'd like to take a quote from the Afternoon Naps MySpace for you - "We're relics from the past, brought back to save the world from complete and utter pop boredom" However strong that statement is, we hope they can achieve their target because we couldn't agree more with how boring the pop scene has been for the past decade, Afternoon Naps might be the solution to a genre in dire need.
Breed 77 are a rather peculiar band from Gibraltar, their sound mixes metal and flamenco music to create some of the most intriguing heavy music we've heard for a while. The band saw major success in 2004 when they released their sophomore album Cultura, since then they've released two other albums which haven't received as much exposure.
We're not the biggest fans of Norah's music but after reading a short quote from her blog we're beginning to think that this record might be a little different from her previous three, here's what the New York sensation had to say about the album; "I've taken a new direction on the The Fall, experimenting with different sounds and a new set of collaborators, including Jacquire King, a noted producer and engineer who has worked with Kings of Leon, Tom Waits, and Modest Mouse among others. Jones enlisted several song-writing collaborators, including Ryan Adams and Okkervil River’s Will Sheff, as well as her frequent partner Jesse Harris."
Nashville collective Turbo Fruits consists of three very peculiar musicians that seem to have exploded onto the international music scene in the past year. With three respectable labels behind them Fat Possum, Ark Recordings and Ecstatic Peace! their success comes to no surprise. Two new songs from the album ate featured in the film Whip IT! along with the band themselves.
Coalesce's first album in ten years, Ox, will be seeing an extremely late release this week after hitting American stores in July of this year. The album will note the comeback of one of the most highly respected punk-garage bands from the past two decades. Ox was recorded at the illustrious Blacklodge Studios and mastered by Mike Fossenkemper at Turtle Tone.
White Rabbit's sophomore album It's Frightening was released on American shores earlier this year, the album reached #184 in the U.S charts. All ten tracks from the record were produced by Britt Daniel from Spoon and mixed by legendary producer Mike McCarthy.
Experimental three piece collective Radian formed back in 1996, since then they've released five respectable records and have been praised for creating some of the most influential music this decade. They're one of the only Austrian bands on Thrill Jockey's roster and this will be their third release with the prestigious British label.
This will be the second release on Upset The Rhythm this week, this time it's two chaps from south London otherwise known as Gentle Friendly. If you'd like to get a free glimpse into Gentle Friendly's sound, you can download a song they released before Ride Slow was recorded HERE.
Lymbyc Systym's last release Field Studies amazed us here at SG, the EP was a split with This Will Destroy You and their combination of Experimental Rock and Electronic created some truly inspiring sounds. This will be the duo's sixth release to date and second full length, we will most certainly be giving this record a spin and we strongly advise that you follow suite.
Them Crooked Vultures are a rarity that every man, women and child should embrace.... It's been four years since the first talks of this wondrous super-group were announced, with Dave Grohl on drums, Josh Homme on guitar, and John Paul Jones on Bass and now we can finally announce that the début full length will be released this week.
