Factory Records, possibly one of the biggest and most influential labels England has ever witnessed, turned 30 this year.

To commemorate the occasion, Rhino Records have announced "A Factory Box Set" which we're told is 4CD's long and will contain music from the whole era that was Factory Records.

Founded in 1978 when Tony Wilson, former Granada TV presenter, met with up with unemployed actor and band manager Alan Erasmus and producer Martin Hannett, The Factory name was originally used for a club that features local bands including The Durutti Column, Cabaret Voltaire and Joy Division. After some success, the three founding members decided to release an EP featuring the local acts who had performed there. Along came “A Factory Sample”, their first ever release and the birth of Factory Records.

The first album release on the label was Joy Division's 'Unknown Pleasures', followed by their hit single 'Love Will Tear Us Apart'. Unfortunately, lead singer Ian Curtis commited suicide before the second album was ever released but the rest of the band renamed themselves to New Order and kept pursuing the fame ahead. In May of 1982, Factory and New Order converted a yacht showroom into the legendary Hacienda nightclub and, as if the extravangance wasn't enough, had Bernard Manning perform the official opening.

This Factory Box Set however, is here to show off much more than just the labels big names. From its first release of “A Factory Sample” through an extremely diverse roster of acts from the post punk of A Certain Ratio, Cabaret Voltaire, The Railway Children, OMD, James and Joy Division to obscurities such as Section 25, Biting Tongues, Crispy Ambulance, Miaow and Swamp Children, to the full flowering of the ‘Madchester scene’, ending fittingly with the last Factory release, “Sunshine and Love” by Happy Mondays.
